Curiously, the device was registered as my 2nd Fire TV Stick and I suppose it was so as I had previously paid for and then subsequently cancelled an order of the Fire TV Stick. I was expecting the device to be already associated with my account like my Kindle was on first login, but that was not the case here. Since the AFTV stick has 802.11ac MIMO WiFi support, it is dual band and catches the 5 GHz signal reasonably well, when compared to my iPhone. While I am sure that I could have used the device off the USB port, I decided to plug in the charger anyway. However, the AFTV Stick was quick to show an 'Unsupported USB Port' message. It weighs in at 31g on my scale, so it shouldn't be stressing any HDMI ports while sticking out of them.Īs I have mentioned previously, the package comes with a 5V/1A charger and hence I initially decided to use the USB port of the same specification available at the back of my TV. However, as you can see in the image, it is much larger than the first-generation Chromecast, so you need to ensure that you have significant clearance at the back (or side) of your TV. The Stick is definitely larger than any pen drive you might have ever seen but still fits in the palm of my hand. It contained the Voice remote, 2 Amazonbasics AAA batteries, HDMI extender, 5V/1A charger, 5-feet MicroUSB cable and of course the Fire TV Stick (not counting the manual and information pamphlets).

The inner packaging, to go along with the fire theme, was in charred black and pretty compact. My unit, purchased in early October 2017, was imported in September and manufactured in August. The Fire TV Stick aptly comes in a fiery orange box which lists some of the apps offered on the platform. With the device in hand, I went on my merry way of testing it in every way I could.

While I had to exhibit some self-restraint in not purchasing the AFTV Stick during the Prime Day sale when it was at its lowest listed price, I subsequently purchased it during the early-October sale as the effective price was ₹2200 courtesy of the ₹499 cashback on the ₹3499 sale price and a ₹450 cashback for using Amazon Pay coupled with the fact that the Amazon Pay balance I used was discounted by 10% on accord of an earlier top-up offer (3499 - 499 - 450 - 350 = 2200). In spite of its low price, the Fire TV Stick was an aspirational purchase for me as I had no shortage of local and web streaming options - DLNA, Samba, Smart TV apps, Raspberry Pi with LibreElec, Chromecast and a Windows tablet connected via HDMI, Plex and Chromecast.
